Kitty Wells, country star, 1919-2012

Kitty Wells did not have any Pop Top 20 hit songs, but she sure was a classic country star.  The song It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels was an explosion in country.  People loved Kitty for talking back to men who would blame women for cheating.  This was way back in 1952!

It wasn’t god who made honky tonk angels
As you said in the words of your song
Too many times married men think they’re still single
That has caused many a good girl to go wrong
It’s a shame that all the blame is on us women
It’s not true that only you men feel the same
From the start most every heart that’s ever broken
Was because there always was a man to blame

Here is the Kitty Wells original song

And here is a 90s superstar remake by Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and Tammy Wynette.  Kitty Wells was featured here as ‘special guest.’

“Kitty Wells was a long-time country music singing star and TV favorite. The most popular song by Kitty Wells was 1952 song It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels. This song was an answer from a women’s perspective to Hank Thompson song The Wild Side of Life. This attitude got the song banned from many radio stations, and Kitty Wells was kept away the country-spectacular Grand Old Opry for a time…” Tunecaster Kitty Wells song hit list, with 135 popular songs
